Considering the fact that each of the combination vaults were supposed to be progressively harder to break into, it didn't make sense to me that the newly named Ludwig Dieter managed to crack the third one so easily, especially since it was hijacked onto the back of a rolling big rig. In keeping with the topic of names, Brad appeared to have taken his last name from actor Nicolas Cage, who in turn took HIS name from comic book character Luke Cage.
The one character who kept distracting me was Brad Cage, portrayed by Stuart Martin, who had such an uncanny resemblance to Hugh Jackman that I thought it might be him, except for the difference in age between the two. Our master safe cracker Sebastian is recruited by a criminal gang intent on breaking into the first three of Wagner's impossible vaults - Rheingold, Valkyrie and Siegfried. There's a fourth one too called the Gotterdamerung, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. Set chronologically before the events of "Army of the Dead", this story is positioned as a caper flick, with the targets being the Wagner Ring Cycle, a trio of legendary vaults created by the master locksmith Hans Wagner (Christian Steyer), who only appears long enough to set us up for the adventure. Just wondering - which is the harder name to pronounce, Sebastian Schlencht or the actor who portrays him Matthias Schweighöfer? I have a feeling that running gag throughout the story was an inside joke by the film makers and players concerning Ludwig Dieter's former identity. It is all very low key like a second rate Fast & Furious film with a few zombie nightmares but with less car action. Interpol is the tail of the crooks led by a mean tempered zealous policeman who was shot in the rear by one of them previously. You just know that the gang members will bicker and eventually split up.
The first job goes like clockwork but you just sense that the next one will go wrong. It is basically a decent if predictable Euro heist movie. Schweighöfer directs as well as starring in it. He is then recruited by a gang of thieves led by Gwendoline (Nathalie Emmanuel) to break into three legendary safes based on Wagner's ring cycle. Unwittingly Sebastian takes part in a competition to find the best safe cracker. He is a mild mannered bank teller with his own YouTube channel detailing the best safes in the world to crack. Featuring the character of Sebastian (Matthias Schweighöfer) who appeared in Army of the Dead. A prequel to Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead that has less zombies and more Wagner.
